I have seen the Art Ensemble of Chicago twice before, in 1980 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and in 2004 at the Jazz Café. The first featured the original lineup (Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors) plus Don Moye (who joined a year into the group's life). By the second Bowie and Favors had died (the later replaced by Jaribu Shahid) and Jarman was making a brief return after a decade away (he also died in January this year). The group has always been a quintet or quartet (or for a short time a trio). For their 50th anniversary celebrations (they were formed in 1969 though there were earlier versions under Mitchell's name) Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye (now aged 79 and 73) brought together a much larger group of musicians. These included Hugh Ragin and Enoch Williamson (who were long term collaborators of theirs in other groups) and several young musicians with connections to the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. 18 (including a conductor) were involved in recording an album “We Are On The Edge”. 12 of them made the trip to the UK where they were joined by two local guests. I have only photographed two of the musicians at this concert before.
