Zachatyesky Monastery

Zachatyesky Monastery (Conception Convent) in Cetral Moscow is the oldest Convent in Moscow, tracing its history to 1360. Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow (Saint Alexis of Moscow, one of the most venerated Russian Orthodox Saints) is believed to have established the Nunnery and named it after the conception of Saint Anne, mother of Virgin Mary. The history of this Convent / Church, like those of many other Russian Orthodox Churches, is one of dramatic upheavals and tribulations. It suffered from devastating fires twice in the Sixteenth Century and was looted. It was shifted to where at present the Church of Christ The Saviour stands. During the ‘Time of Troubles’, a period or anarchy and lawlessness between the rules of the Rurik Dynasty and the Romanovs, the convent was subject of much vandalism and loot. It was restored to the original site and restoration work and additions continued till 1920, but soon after the Soviet Revolution, it was taken over by the Government and partly razed. What remained were used as a hospital, a jail for juveniles and a hospital till in 1991 restoration work started. It was restored to the present condition only in 2011.
In a tribute to the Founder of the Convent, Saint Alexis, a tall and magnificent statue was erected in front of the gate.
