New Salem Baptist Church - a photo on Flickriver

            New Salem Baptist Church was built in 1886 by a brick mason named Isaac Dockery, who made the brick from material from the field next to the church property. The church is the oldest surviving structure in Sevierville, Tennessee and is located on Eastgate Rd. 

The building was originally a "Union" church that was open to all African-American denominations. In 1897, it became New Salem Baptist Church.

The church was used until the 1950's, when it was leased to other congregations. Descendants of Isaac Dockery are among those that are seeking funding to have the building restored. The church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 2003.
