Sicily - a photo on Flickriver

Sicily

            It was an offer we couldn’t refuse: a trilogy of Sicilian villages little changed for generations; a mafia story of vendettas and family honour; and a Hollywood movie that became one of the greatest American movies of all time.

So here, we’re on a Godfather tour in northeast Sicily, surrounded by Godfather tragics who filled the rickety tables of Bar Vitelli in the hilltop village of Savoca.

It is at this spot that a besotted Michael Corleone, played by Al Pacino, asked the wrong man about a beautiful young girl he had seen, Apollonia Vitelli.

“In Sicily, women are more dangerous than shotguns,’’ he had been warned by his bodyguard, and Vitelli’s angry reaction to the American’s interest in his daughter was a case in point.

What the locals think of the hundreds who stream up to their village each day for a Godfather fix is anyone’s guess, but they’ve obviously accepted that the tour buses and the endless selfies at the film’s locations are “strictly business”, as the script would say.
