St Kitts: Red Ivy, Weathered Beam, Yellow Wall

This is another shot I came across among a few older images that I originally processed and posted on
Flickr back in May 2009: www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/3538346415/in/datetaken/ albeit in a 4:3 format native to the camera used. I used this opportunity to reprocess the image using my current PP methods and also crop it to a square format that I now feel better fits the subject matter. Taken back in 2008 with my then camera of choice, a Panasonic Lumix FZ30 bridge camera, in a spot near to the location of my recent post (www.flickr.com/photos/jwvraets/53353418724/in/dateposted/ ) in a back alley in downtown St Catharines (affectionately known to locals as simply St Kitts), Ontario. The alley is now long gone, a victim of the seemingly endless attempts to resurrect the once bustling classical downtown business district. Here, the bright colour schemes were provided by Mother Nature and someone’s paintbrush.. - JW

Tech Details:

The original image was taken with a hand-held Panasonic Lumix FZ30, ISO80, 1/25 sec, f/5.6, focal length: 48.7mm (medium tele on the FZ30), Aperture Priority mode, daylight WB. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Lumix SOOC JPEG source file (RAW files not produced by camera for external PP): set final image size to be 8000 px wide, Use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool roated and shifted to cover the ivy and wood at the bottom of the frame and then brighten that area (NOT darken), slightly increase Contrast and Chromaticity in L-A-B mode, slightly increase Vibrance, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Curves tool to brighten the top 1/2 of the curve and then also reduce the bottom 20% brightness to get a bit better blacks/darkest areas, increase overall contrast and a bit more brightness, sharpen slightly, save, scale image to 6000 px wide, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px wide for posting online, save.
