Field Bindweed (Convolvulis Arvensis) On Leek Seed Head

            As the hobble improves to a wobble, I managed to find a comfortable way to get a still life image of a pair of seed heads on some of my Leeks, as well as the nasty Field Bindweed (Convulvulis Arvensis – a perennial garden problem) that provided a couple of nice white flowers and  lots of nice arrow-shaped leaves as it tries to strangle its support. I propped a spring-loaded 5-in-1 reflector behind the subject and then expended an inordinate amount of patience to capture lulls in the breeze as I adjusted focus for a focus-stacked image in PP. Perfect? Nope. But as close as I could get in a reasonable amount of time.  - JW

Tech Details:

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a Tamron 90mm 1:2.8 Macro, ISO100, Daylight WB, Aperture priority mode, Manual metering f/10.0, 1/30 for three frames focused on the flower, the seed head and the supporting pole, with the intent to blend focus in PP. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file  using the same settings for each of the three frames: set final image size to be 9000px high,  use the Tone Curve 2 tool in parametric mode to  boos the lights, use Shadows/Highlights to further recover highlights in the flowers, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: load all three images into GIMP with the sharp flowers image as the base and then the other two frames as layers and on those two layers add black/transparent layer masks, manually use a soft brush of varying sizes to paint in the desired sharp areas from the two top layers, create new working layer from the visible result, clone out artifacts caused by subject movement in the breeze, use a non-destructive Dodge/Burn layer to fine tune the tonality of the white flowers, use the Curves tool to darken the very darkest part of the curve only so wrinkles in the black background fabric were not apparent, create new working layer from visible result, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000px high, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3000 px high, sharpen, save.
