In a period of heavy overcast yesterday, which seemed to threaten a rain shower (but never did actually rain), I looked out to the garden. Along the back is a stand of large-leaved Hosta. Against this dark, green background and its dramatic leaf shapes, a couple of diminutive, intensely pink flowers stood out, distracting the eye completely from the background. These were Pink Lychnis (also known as Lychnis Coronaria and, more commonly, Rose Campion). So I hobbled out, dragging camera gear and sat on the ground (as best I could) and got off a few frames. The sacrifices I make for art! Each summer I try to remind myself to plant more of these next year. So far, an unfilled promise. But perhaps next year... - JW

Taken using a tripod-mounted Nikon D800 fitted with a Tamron 90mm 1:2.8 Macro, ISO100, Daylight WB, Aperture priority mode, Spot metering off the centre of the right flower, f/5.0, 1/80 sec with an EV-1.00 exposure bias. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: set final image size to be 9000px wide, crop to a 16x9 format, use the Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool to darken the bottom left area and reduce the distraction of its brightness relative to the rest o the image, slightly increase Vibrance, apply Dynamic Range Compression at default levels to tame the Hosta leaves’ brightness relative to the pink flowers, sharpen (edges only), save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: use the Hue-Saturation-Brightness tool to slightly slightly increase the magenta channel’s brightness and saturation, add a non-destructive Dodge/Burn layer and use it to brighten the flower centres and also darken a couple of bright leaves on the left edge, create new working layer from visible result, sharpen, save, scale image to 7000px wide, sharpen, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, scale image to 3700 px wide, sharpen, save.
