            On a dry lake-bed 
on the outskirts of a desert town 
I collected rocks the size of basketballs 
and formed a circle 
It took two months to complete 
and is roughly the size of a Volkswagen beetle
I placed two stone chairs in its center
It is a place for meditation
It is a place for spirits

I buried my great-grandmother here 
Holding her ashes in my hands
I thought of how she held me as a child
I tell her not to look back
then scatter her remains over the ground 
She settles into the sand and rock 
some of her drifting away 
in the breeze

after she died my father came into my room one day and tossed her onto my lap in a box. 
"Here's your great grandmother", he said. 
I returned her to the ground. 
And she returned to the wind.
