Accoring to the legend a monk named Sumanathera had dream to go look for a relic. He found a bone that supposedly was Buddha's shoulder bone. 

It glowed, could move, disappeared and replicated itself. Sumanathere took it to king Dhammaraja. However, the bone did not show any of its supernatural powers. 

Another king, Nu Naone heard of the bone and asked to see it. While examining it, the bone broke into two pieces. 

The smaller part is enshrined in the temple Suandok. 

The other piece was placed by the king on a white elephant that was released. It climbed Doi Suthep. On the mountain, the elephant stopped, trumpeted three times and fell dead to the ground. 

It was interpreted as an omen and the king immediately ordered a temple to be erected at the site.
