Lunar Eclipse, October 8, 2014

This morning's lunar eclipse over the San Francisco Bay, as seen from the hills above Berkeley (October 8, 2014). The moons are slightly larger than they should be against this background (for clarity), but the sequence and relative positions are a good representation. The full sequence lasted about four and a half hours.

Below us in the bay a low layer of fog did its best to try and obscure the scenery, but the skies above us were beautifully clear all night. It was a long night, but it was so cool to watch a full lunar eclipse without any clouds getting in the way!

The background image was shot using a Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens (and is a small stitched panorama that captures the area of sky through which the moon traveled during the eclipse), and the multiple moon shots were photographed using a Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 lens. In the background image, the moon (slightly smaller than the overlayed moons) is actually under the last but one moon on the right!
