            Fraxinus velutina—velvet ash. I, like nearly every boy growing up in the 1940s and 50s, knew ash as the tree for baseball bats.  Alas, this is no longer the case for the eastern ash is disappearing, the victim of overharvesting and devastating infestations of the emerald ash borer . The velvet ash of the desert southwest has escaped the deadly insects so far and continues to thrive.  It is found in canyons and riparian environments in arid areas from southern California eastward to Texas and throughout northern Mexico.  It is a graceful specimen tree for yards and street plantings throughout its range.  Photographed at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA..
