            Sargent NE, October 1982 — One of the changes in the newspaper/publishing industries was the photo-typesetter. The machine combined the computer with the photographic process to produce type instead of hot lead. This was a fantastic change.

To begin with it meant that parts of the printing plant had to be air conditioned. The computers required cooling. This was wonderful for the workers! 

Early on the machines were paper tape driven. Not convenient, but easier than what we had before. The ability to directly typeset from the Associated Press feed was another huge improvement.

This particular machine was a headliner. If I remember right, we used it to set type from 14-72 points. If you needed, or wanted. You could change the font by opening up the machine and changing a negative strip on a drum. For this machine we had Helvetica, Park Place, Bodoni, Times, Futura, Garamond. Not the tens, or hundreds, or even thousands of today!

On this model there was no screen at all. Some of the later ones had an LED readout. Sometimes you just plain typed out your headline twice so that you were sure to get it. Hence cut and paste was born. No lie..... But cut and pasting headlines was infinitely easier than body copy.

The journalism schools taught systems on how to gauge how many words would fit in what space with what type size so you could accurately gauge the size needed.

In the background is a lay-out board. To the left are galleys of type waiting to be pasted onto the sheet of paper that would make up the newspaper. We used hot wax to hold the headlines and type onto the layout paper. On the back wall you might be able to see other things pasted there which would be included in the newspaper. Page numbers, by-lines, often used type was often kept on the walls. It was just plain handy.
