Meteor Shower Abandoned School 7668 A (Explored)

            Perseid meteor shower and the abandoned Center Ridge Schoolhouse on high prairie east of Dufur, Oregon in Wasco County.

This photo is the result of 418 twenty-second exposures taken over 2.5 hours that captured about 20 meteors.  The Perseid ‘shower’, the most predictable annual meteor shower, produces on average of 100 meteors an hour.

This was my first effort photographing a meteor shower, so I learned a lot.   Planning the trip at home using Google Maps, star maps and my experience photographing Central Oregon, I picked two possible shooting locations about 30 miles apart, but unfortunately, neither place worked-out when I visited them on this night.  (Next time, I’ll stay in the area an extra day to scout scenes better).

When those scenes didn’t work, I reluctantly headed to this well-known abandoned school house, popular with Portland and Seattle photographers for night photography.   Sure enough, when I got there around midnight, there were three photographers with seven cameras on tripods setup on the dirt road, shooting in the pitch dark.  (They likely had been there since dusk).    Even with my headlights off and wearing my red head-lamp, one of them berated me for not planning better and disturbing them as I stepped out of my car with my gear.    (Next time, I’ll shoot in Central Washington at a more remote scene).

After finding a spot that wouldn’t disturb the other photographers, I pointed my camera North, toward the shower radiant, set my camera for continuous shooting, and sat down on a folding chair with a blanket.   I decided to treat the trip as a learning experience and an opportunity to appreciate the awe-inspiring summer night sky while my camera took photos until its battery was drained.

Creating this composite photo using Starry Landscape Stacker, ON1 Photo Suite and Photoshop took about 12 hours.
