            Bewässerungskanal (Levada) in der Nähe von Odeceixe, kurz nach Sonnenaufgang.
Levadas heißen die künstlichen Wasserläufe, die in Portugal und auf Madeira (Portugal) erbaut wurden, um Wasser aus den niederschlagsreicheren Gebieten zu den landwirtschaftlichen Anbaugebieten zu leiten. Auf Madeira wird dazu Wasser aus dem Norden und dem Zentrum der Insel in den Süden geleitet. Meist haben Levadas nur ein geringes Gefälle. Sie umfahren Täler und Berge, verlaufen durch Tunnels und kreuzen natürliche Wasserläufe auf Aquädukten.
Wasser der Levadas dient auch der Stromerzeugung. Die sie begleitenden Wege werden touristisch als Wanderwege genutzt.

Levadas are the names of the artificial watercourses built in Portugal and Madeira (Portugal) to bring water from the areas with higher rainfall to the agricultural areas. In Madeira, this is done by channeling water from the north and center of the island to the south. In most cases, levadas have only a slight gradient. They bypass valleys and mountains, run through tunnels and cross natural watercourses on aqueducts.
Water from the levadas is also used to generate electricity. The paths that accompany them are used for tourism as hiking trails.
