Thuin, picturesque Walloon municipality on the river Sambre

Thuin, capital of Thudinie, in the Walloon region, appears on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Sambre and the Biesmelle. Historically a rich town, it was mentioned for the first time in 866 as "Tudinio" in a survey of property of the Abbey of Lobbes. In 888, it was ceded to the principality of Liege until the Revolution, or for more than nine centuries.
In 972, Notger, Prince-Bishop, the first fortified it with a stone wall. In the 12th century, the population growth forced the construction of a second wall extending the first.
Between Thudiniens (citizens of Thuin) and skippers, is a very long love affair. The Sambre is rooted in France, stretches then meander meandering in Belgium, through Erquelinnes and Thuin before reaching the Meuse through Namur and Charleroi.
The first skippers to make the journey by water to Paris in 1835 were Thudiniens, the brothers Blampain. Thuin had 1,100 heads of households boatmen on a population of 5,000 inhabitants, five shipyards in action along the Sambre, towing companies, insurance. From the dawn of the development of inland water transport, almost all were Thudiniens boatmen!
