The Limestone Way. This is a superb 46-mile walk across the heart of the Peak District National Park. 'The Limestone Way', named after the rock which was formed 300 million years ago, is a way marked long distance route with spectacular scenery and views from it's start at Castleton in the Hope Valley to it's end at Rocester in Staffordshire. It passes through dramatic dales, a green rolling landscape and several picturesque villages.

Our Lathkill Dale to Youlgrave walk is always a favourite section of the Limestone Way.

Goosanders, Tufted Ducks, Dippers, Mallards, Swans, Moorhens, Coots, Wrens...the list goes on and on for wildlife on the River Lathkill...plus the wildflowers on show. Today we saw Butterbur, Barren Strawberry, Violets (white), Lesser Celandine etc. Watch out for the Mallard Ducks, they can spot you taking a sandwich out of your rucksack a mile a way...how do they do it!!

Parking at the top of the hill in the village of Over Haddon, walk down past St Anne's church (see next image in photostream) and you come to this lovely old building on the River Lathkill. There is another walk to the right through the gate in the shot. Or you can turn left and follow the river with it's numerous little waterfalls as it drops down following the route to Youlgrave, another very pretty village. There is a 'quiet' lane (there is a notice saying 'Quiet Lane) en route where you can see Hawks, if you're lucky!

So, two walks...one of 9 miles or the shorter one of 6 miles. Or just saunter down beside the river, have a look at the superb trout in crystal clear, turquoise tone water, have a picnic (ducks allowing !!) and saunter back. Some nice tea rooms in the village if you don't want to take a picnic. Take a map and choose...have fun!
