The Dark Visage

The intriguing young Glasgow-based street artist, Frodrik (frodrik.uk), has made quite a splash across the “Dear Green Place” over the past couple of years. He specialises in monochrome work - but there’s one in particular that has a stunningly darker-than-usual visage, and is not commonly photographed, with it being hidden up a notorious communal stairwell.

It can be located halfway up the stairs on 45 Cambridge Street, at what in the 1970s and through the 80s was formerly the Kensitas Club Gift Shop - where, for the incentive to smoke like a chimney, with your fag coupons you could trade in your various cancers and chronic coughs for white goods’ items of a kettle or a toaster - in what has now become a proper little den of iniquity for another addiction.

The mural looks darker than any of Frodrik’s other monochrome works, but perhaps that’s because she’s disapprovingly looking directly across to a sizeable stash sitting on the concrete stairs of used syringes, disused crack pipes, glue-sniffing paraphernalia, and the seemingly ubiquitous empty half bottles of Buckfast tonic wine, otherwise known round these parts as ‘wreck-the-hoose juice’ or ‘commotion lotion’.
