Hidden Homeless

When it is raining heavily, or in the gloomy dark of night, you can almost see passer-bys having a double take as they walk behind St. George’s Tron Church on Glasgow's Nelson Mandela Square, trying hard not to notice the poor “homeless person” curled up and lying on a bench.

It is, in fact, a stunning bronze statue that depicts Jesus huddled underneath the blanket - the brutal crucifixion wounds on the feet are the only clue and it’s a stark reminder of the poor and downtrodden hidden in plain sight right in the middle of the Dear Green Place's main palaces of consumption.

In the midst of the celebration of Mammon, this artwork, entitled 'Homeless Jesus', by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz (www.sculpturebytps.com), is intended as a poignant reminder of the less fortunate in society - and just one of several similar installations strategically placed in other metropolises worldwide by the figurative artist in reaction to the growing number of homeless living on the streets.
