This is one of the most abundant thistles and its fine bearing, its flowers of an orange-yellow colour and the fact that it releases a whitish liquid when cut, differentiates it from others. Its young leaves and roots, boiled, can be consumed as a vegetable and its infusion a diuretic. Its flowers have been used to dilute saffron. The infusion of the root with wine, and the macerated root itself, were used as a deodorant.

Description: A biannual or perennial, robust, downy, very spiny plant 20-100 cm. high, with a whitish latex and alate spiny stems. Ptiolate, deeply divided lower leaves, up to 12 cm. long, less spiny than the upper ones which are semiembracing, lance-shaped, stiff anf deeply toothed. Capitulums 3 cm. long surrounded by an involucres of spiny bracts. Flowers are all ligulate, yellow, hermaphrodite and with five teeth. Aquenium 5mm.  long

Habitat: Lots, uncultivated fields.
Flowering: May – August.
