Stone, Cement & Real Rail Ale on the old GC's lines east of Sheffield - 2655

* Darnall Station, Lincoln Line
With around a half hour between events at the two locations, with the arrival of the star of the show last, its over to the eastern side of Darnall Station, itself looking much the worse for contemporary changes, and this next shot looks east along the GC's Lincoln line towards Sheffield. This is the area, now completely 'done over'; the areas on both sides of the line once festooned with old railway works in the form of Darnall Engine Shed, coded 39B then in Code 41A, on the left and on the right, the well-known Cravens Carriage & Wagon Works. Hard to believe, and I guess the occupants probably don't know or care about the areas past history, but there are still tangible pieces left, line-side of what this place used to be like. The end of the Woodhead line electrification scheme wasn't far off, just around the corner behind the camera at Rotherwood, and this area was crowded with the infrastructure to support all the installation and, as can probably be discerned here, there used to be a much more generous railway layout. The site of the Darnall Engine Shed is now partly occupied by a large caravan & recreational vehicle parking area, the extensive line of all-white vehicles proving very difficult, photographically , to deal with; this and the following pictures having been cropped and having had gradient filtering added to remove the distracting 'whiteness'. Approaching at around half past the hour, a fairly regular service from the Hope Valley in the form of a cement train; the leading loco, Freightliner class 66, 66623, 'Bill Bolsover' having been seen last week, in the video on Peak Forest, parked up at Earles Sidings, see-

sat in a line of other Freightliner units in the sidings there. It has now been loaded up with a rake of cement tanks from the Castleton Cement works, the wagons brought out by the resident class 20 shunter, No.3, the tanks then being assembled into this 30, PCA suspension tank wagon train, of 600 tonnes. 'Billy Blue', 66623 is heading from Earles Sidings to the West Burton Power Station on the 6E08 working and as the timing load is 600 tonnes, it is probably heading to the power station to fill up with fly ash to take back to the cement works for processing into cement.
