Midnight is flesh
On ancient evenings when blue fires dance,
Slow, stealthy, seductive
It sneaks up on me with its tiny feet
whispering in a foreign tongue, 
Words that tickle the back of my neck,
That sting my cheeks, 
That inflame the parts of me that have long been sleeping, 
and the next thing I know, 
My legs are tangled up in the sheets.
My hair’s all a-muss, 
My nightgown is lying in a heap on the bedroom floor,
And I cannot understand 
why it’s suddenly so goddamn hot in the bedroom 

Midnight is a memory
Mystery shrouds our sleep-laden eyes,
Who needs to see anyway? 
There are moments when touch is the only thing that’s real.
I feel you there, the warmth of your body,
Your hand reaching out, 
Bridging the spaces between us.
These are the moments that I want to hold onto.
I collect them like feathers found during walks through the park.
They fill up the hidden box under our bed,
Here, you rub my belly, 
There, I run my fingers through your hair 
Here, we’re reading side by side in bed… 
These are the moments that make up a life.

Midnight is an ocean 
Sleep finds me again 
I dream of the sea,
Your body shimmering in strong light as you dive in.
I dream of picnics on the rocks
And of being stranded on the island together when the tide rolls in 
We hold each other through the descending darkness and into the coming light,
Crossing back over when the tide is low
