(b.1974) Wayne Lawrence is a St.Kitts born documentary fine art photographer based in Brooklyn, New York. His work represents a visual diary of his life’s journey and focuses on his relationship to communities otherwise overlooked by mainstream media.

Longtemps stigmatisée comme un ghetto, la plage «Orchard Beach» est un long ruban de construction de 1.6 kilomètres située dans le Nord-Est du Bronx. Construit dans les années 1930, le «Bronx Riviera» a servi d’oasis pendant des générations à une classe ouvrière en constante lutte. Je ressens un lien affectif et personnel avec cette population et mon travail consiste à montrer la force et la dignité de ces âmes merveilleuses qui m'ont offert un peu de leur sensibilité.
Ces témoignages ce sont étalés sur quatre ans et m’ont servi de méditation. Sur la plage, je marche en silence constamment à la recherche de rencontres qui révèlent les émotions qui se cachent sous la surface. Je me fie à mon instinct et je suis attiré encore et toujours par les rituels de la jeunesse, de l'amour, des obligations familiale et de la fierté culturelle. A chacun de mes pas, je sais que je suis témoin privilégié de l'histoire vivante d'une communauté, et je m'approche de mes sujets comme si la chose la plus importante à ce moment-là : c'est notre présence commune.

Long stigmatized as a “ghetto” beach, Orchard Beach is a mile long sliver of constructed landscape situated in the North-eastern Bronx with a history as complex as the borough itself. Built in the 1930’s, “The Bronx Riviera” has served as a workingman’s oasis for generations of families living in an environment defined by struggle.
I feel a personal connection to this struggle and work to show the strength and dignity of the many wonderful souls who have allowed me the time to tell this story. My four-year journey has been a meditation of sorts. Amidst the activities on the beach, I walk in silence constantly searching for connections that reveal emotions hidden beneath the surface of this eroded terrain. I rely on my instincts and find that I am drawn to rituals of youth, love, familial bonds, and cultural pride. Whenever I step onto the sandy landscape, I know that I am witnessing history being made and I approach my subjects as though the most important thing at that moment is that we are present.
