Grindavík eruption - a photo on Flickriver

            The abandoned town of Grindavík in SW-Iceland, seen from an airplane. The dark fields just north of the town are lava streams from the volcanic eruption that started on 14 Jan 2024, and lasted for less than two days, even if it was only officially declared over on 19 Jan. The smaller patch right by the edge of town destroyed three houses. The town was evacuated before the eruption, as it had been expected for some time, and tremors indicated imminent action. Grindavík was actually evacuated earlier, on 10 Nov 2023, after intense seismic activities, which damaged many houses, caused huge rifts to appear in town, and indicated a possible volcanic eruption as magma filled fissures underground. An eruption did occur on 18 Dec, a big but short-lived affair. It was luckily a bit north of Grindavík and east of the Blue Lagoon - it is the large dark field a little further inland on the picture. After that eruption, there were calls for people to return to Grindavík, and some had done that, despite warnings from geologists that magma continued to flow in the system from below. Just before the 14 Jan eruption the alert was heightened and the town evacuated. These events are not over, and it is clear that the 3700 inhabitants of Grindavík will not move back for the foreseeable future.
