"Denver & Rio Grande Western No. 1706 was a fine example of the 4-8-4 type which as well-suited to mountain railroading. With drivers only 70 inches in diameter (relatively low for this wheel arrangement), this locomotive's 63,700 lbs. tractive effort gave it the ability to climb most grades on the Rio Grande wihtout too much difficulty. However, it was also capable of relatively high speeds on the flat tracks and across the desert where grades were negligible...
