Mainz, Kapuzinerstraße, St. Ignaz Kirche - St. Ignatius' Church

            Inmitten der niedrigen Altstadthäuser der Kapuzinerstraße erhebt sich die rote Sandsteinfassade von St. Ignaz. Sie ist versehen mit grauen Sandsteinfiguren, unter anderem der des Kirchenpatrons und Märtyrers St. Ignatius von Antiochien (+ nach 110). Zwischen 1763 und 1774 ist die Kirche nach Plänen von Johann Peter Jäger errichtet worden und zwar anstelle der alten Kirche eines nach 1200 in die Mainzer Stadtmauer einbezogenen Vorortes.

Die Kirche zeigt ein beeindruckendes Zusammenspiel von Barock als Ausdruck der Glaubensfreude und des Klassizismus als Ausdruck der Vernunft. Zwischen den strengen Linien des Klassizismus erscheinen üppige Stuckarbeiten und Putten. Deckengemälde erzählen vom Leben und Sterben des hl. Ignatius. Sie stammen ursprünglich vom Barockmaler Johann Baptist Enderle, wurden später aber mehrmals nachgearbeitet, zuletzt nach den Schäden im 2. Weltkrieg..
