Main Street: Volcano, California - a photo on Flickriver

            Central thoroughfare in the small California community of Volcano (population 115 at 2010 census).  Formerly called "Soldier's Gulch", the area was discovered and settled in 1848 by Union soldiers who had formerly served in "Stevenson's Regiment" under Colonel Jonathan Drake Stevenson (1800–1894).  By 1853 the flats and gulches swarmed with men who searched for gold using Hydraulic mining operations.  The process brought thousands of fortune seekers to form a town of 17 hotels, a library, a theater, and courts of quick justice. During the Civil War, Volcano's gold served the Union.
