'Solitaire' by David Park - a photo on Flickriver

            David Park (1911-1960) was an American painter and a pioneer of the Bay Area Figurative Movement in painting during the 1950s. Park’s work explored the human body and its relationship with its surroundings, which he investigated through portraits, crowds, and people conversing with one another.   His paintings influenced the course of Bay Area art in his day by initiating a historic new direction. The Bay Area Figurative movement is now considered the area's most singular contribution to 20th-century American art.

Park’s rise as a painter was gradual and hard won. His artistic ascent was made despite decades of financial hardship.  Park, who died at 49 of cancer, made his best works at the end of his career.
