Amazon Water Lily (Victoria amazonica)

            Photographed at the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers.  The background is a reflection in the water of the glass dome overhead.  The Conservatory, located in Golden Gate Park, was built in 1879 as California's first municipal greenhouse.  It was patterned after the conservatory at Kew Gardens in Great Britain and is a distinguished example of the late Victorian style using early techniques of mass production and assembly of simple glass units.

The Victoria amazonica is a giant among water lilies.  Their leaves can grow to six feet in diameter and, though delicate, could support the weight of a small child.  The flower is native to the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin.  The genus name was given in honor of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
