Fruit Still Life - a photo on Flickriver

Fruit Still Life

            These beautiful blown glass and alder fruit forms are the property of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and were photographed on display at the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park.  The black background is a layer mask I created in Photoshop CS3.  The rest of the photograph is untouched.  The glass forms were   created collaboratively by Flora C. Mace and Joey Kirkpatrick in 1997.  The two, who have worked together for over 30 years, are largely known for their work with large scale blown glass fruit and vegetable forms.  

Mace and Kirkpatrick describe the process of creating these fruit forms as unique....."Our approach evolved out of our experience using the two dimensional painting tradition. As in painting, we have learned to build layers of color by sifting colored crushed glass powders onto hot glass during the blowing process. It was exciting to find a method of "painting" onto three dimensional blown glass, creating forms with a painterly surface of realistic color and textures."
