'Avenue of Schloss Kammer Park' by Gustav Klimt

            While Austrian artist Gustav Klimt's (1862-1918) first landscapes date from the early 1880's, it was not until the late 1890's that he turned consistently to landscape subjects.  Painting landscapes offered Klimt an opportunity to avoid directed commissions and take a little more control of his work.  It also enabled the artist to escape to the Austrian countryside, and occasionally abroad.  During his final years, landscapes represented one-fifth of his output.

Klimt's landscapes speak of an individual who had concerns about the direction of nature at that time, specifically man's treatment of it.  They express his wider concerns with biological growth and the cycle of life.  Their dazzling decorative surfaces and abstracted motifs align him with emergent modernist tendencies.

Schloss Kammer is located in upper Austria near Salzburg.  This Klimt original painting was seen and photographed on display at San Francisco's 'Palace of The Legion of Honor'.
