Israel's Holy City of Tzfat - a photo on Flickriver

            The Meam Loez, in the name of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, says that the Messiah will come from Tzfat on his way to Jerusalem.  The Ari HaKodesh said that until the Third Temple is built, the Shechinah (God's Manifest Presence) rests upon Tzfat.

Tzfat, (also spelled Safed or Zefat) is a small town located in the mountains of the Upper Galilee in Northern Israel.  It is one of the four holy cities in Israel and has a rich and glorious past.  According to legend Tzfat is where Shem and Ever, son and grandson of Noah, established their yeshiva (school for religious and secular education) where Jacob studied for many years. The town was founded in 70AD and flourished in the 16th century when many famous Jewish religious scholars and mystics moved here following the Spanish Expulsion. Tzfat then became the spiritual center of the Jewish world, where Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism) reached the peak of its influence. 

The old part of town consists of narrow and picturesque cobblestone alleys like the one in this photograph.  Many artists galleries now serve a booming tourist trade and though the town suffered during the War of Independence in 1948 and in subsequent bombings from Lebanon and Syria in the north, it still retains its natural beauty and charm.
