Rookie ESA Astronaut Sophie Adenot - a photo on Flickriver

Sophie Adenot was inducted into the ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut corps in November 2022 and has been training since then.

She has degrees in aerospace engineering from ISAE in Toulouse and MIT and has many years of experience as a helicopter pilot, also for SAR missions, and as a helicopter test pilot.

I was very impressed by her description of how she was once piloting a helicopter that was lifting a large cable that suddenly started swinging wildly, as the oscillations induced by the helicopter rotor or the air was matching a resonance frequency of the cable. She had to handle that emergency coolly. Jettisoning the cable was not an option because they were too close to land (I think I would have ditched it anyway), so the situation became a bit tricky.

I have heard some WW2 pilots' stories: "... there I was, upside down in a cloud, one engine gone, the other on fire, the wing spar cracked ... and my glass was empty ..." , but hers was better, as it really happened.

If I ever had to fly in a spacecraft that developed some serious problem on the way to the moon, I'd rather have Sophie in my crew than some dude with a PhD in astronomy, that's for sure.
