Twenty minutes at Banff (Two) - a photo on Flickriver

            After a spectacular ride through the Canadian Rockies over the Continental Divide, the eastbound VIA Rail Canadian I rode in July 1987 made a lengthy station stop at Banff, Alberta. There, the numerous Japanese honeymooners and tourists aboard detrained. The passenger load dropped so much that at least two sleepers were switched out of the train at Calgary. 

Before the trip, I had bought into the "Great White North" concept, and packed warm clothing. When I stepped out onto the platform at Banff, I was astounded at how hot the midday temperature was. I broke a decent sweat hoofing it to each end of the train for these photos. 

During the trip, we spent a lot of time in dome-observation car Strathcona Park. My father had not yet quit smoking, and the obs was the only car in the train in which passengers could smoke.
