Put it o'er theer

The Corporation bus garage typically had enough undercover accommodation to house the whole fleet under cover. Probably built originally to house the town's trams. these depots tended to be cavernous and forbidding places with a mix of brick and dressed stone - and often with a fearsome foreman in an office near the entrance who, seemingly, made it his life's work to keep out young enthusiasts.

Even so, in many place you might see a surprising number of buses stored outside during the day. This would usually be in a handy spot close to the town centre, so that buses could be parked between duties (or between the morning and evening peak hours) without the fuel expense of running to and from the garage further out of town.

Not all towns did this but Bury Corporation did, parking buses in the day on what was known as 'The Mosses' on what's now the site of Angouleme Way and large retail units not far from Bury Market.

It looks like bus 206 has just finished a school run from Walmersley to Bury Grammar School; while the Leyland Atlantean in the background has just done a short run from Whitefield into the town centre. Their crews were no doubt in the canteen, or possibly at home after the first part of a 'split shift' but all these buses would be off again after a pause that could be anything from a quarter of an hour to most of the day.

It's pleasing to note that one of these Leyland PD3 buses, 201, is immaculately kept in private preservation; while one of the Leyland Atlanteans, 116, is restored and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.
