Euglossa dilemma: Green Orchid Bee - a photo on Flickriver

            A Green Orchid Bee seen in Vero Beach, Florida.  All Orchid Bees are natives of the New World tropics.  Their original range includes Mexico, Central America and tropical South America.  They were first seen in South Florida in 2003 and have been spreading northward.  It is likely that they were accidently carried to Florida by a nest on a shipping container, or shipping pallet.  I have seen them in the Vero Beach area several times in the last 10 years.
