Male Eurasian Brown Bear - a photo on Flickriver

            Just after sunrise, a large male Eurasian Brown Bear (Ursus arctos arctos) ambles up to the bank. This guy is very close to heading into hibernation for the year. He's about at maximum weight - probably between 600-700 lbs. There are more brown bears (est. 2,000) in Finland than there are in the lower 48 states of the USA. Of course, there are approximately 30,000 in Alaska. This bear is about the same size as the big males we've seen in the Rocky Mountains region and in interior Alaska. However, much smaller than the big males we've seen in coastal Alaska. The rich food sources (primarily salmon) found in coastal Alaska makes those big males much larger - it's not unusual to see Brown Bears that weigh in at 1,000 - 1,200 pounds. This guy, nicknamed "Maradonna" by local guides, was in excellent shape, though. Very good looking bear and ready for hibernation!

NOTE: this animal was filmed from a blind. In this area, animals are attracted to the location using bait, in order to photograph, film, and study them. They are not hunted in this area.
