Biella – Il battistero (XI secolo)

            Il Battistero di Biella, proprio accanto al Duomo, è una delle più notevoli opere del primo romanico in Piemonte e risale all’XI secolo. All’interno vi sono emergenze di affreschi dipinti intorno al XII-XIII secolo.
Si trova nella parte laterale della cattedrale ed è a croce greca formata da quattro nicchioni curvilinei, sormontati da un tamburo ottagonale chiuso da una lanterna a pianta quadrata. All’interno anticamente le pareti erano completamente affrescate e i dipinti, solo parzialmente ancora esistenti e appartenenti probabilmente al XIII secolo, erano costituiti da immagini di ex voto fatti eseguire da nobili facoltosi. Pur avendo ancora come modello l’antica architettura romana l’insieme evidenzia come appartenga ad un periodo di declino costrittivo come mostrato dalla mediocre costruzione in muratura, insieme disordinato di ciottoli disposti a spina di pesce e strati di  mattoni ugualmente uniti tra loro da spessi strati di malta.  

The baptistery of Biella is one of the most important works of early Romanesque period in Piedmont and it was built in the eleventh century. Inside there are frescoes painted about the twelfth or thirteenth century.
It is located on the side of the cathedral and it has a Greek cross formed by four curved niches surmounted by an octagonal drum closed by a square-shaped lantern. On the inside the ancient walls were completely painted, today partially existing, probably belonging to the thirteenth century. They were images of votive offerings made for wealthy nobles. The model of construction still was the ancient Roman architecture but the baptistery shows that all belong to a period of decline as shown by poor construction in stones arranged in a herringbone pattern and layers of bricks also joined together by thick layers of mortar.
