The Arizona Territory (9/52) - a photo on Flickriver

            Jasper, Jean and I took the Massacre Grounds Trail on Saturday.  It was a beautiful hike in the Superstition Mountains, about 40 minutes from hour house.  5.8 miles (9.3km) and 1247 ft (380m) elevation gain.   Not difficult. but it did get the heart rate up a couple of times.  It ended at a small waterfall, which frankly surprised us.  Being the desert and all, waterfalls are not that prevalent.   But apparently enough rain lately that the waterfall was flowing 

Massacre Grounds is sort of a macabre name for a trail.  The legend is that back in 1848, when Arizona was still a territory, the Peralta family of Northern Mexico had a crew mining gold in the Superstition Mountains.  On a routine trip to bring their mined gold back to Mexico, they were ambushed and massacred by the Apache Indians. Two of the Peralta family made it back to tell the story.  The legend further says that the Apaches hid the gold and covered the mine entrance
