Granddaddy Brazell (Explore #493 - 9/15/2016)

            If you looked up "granddaddy" in a pictorial dictionary, you might find someone who looks like this. Allow me to introduce you to John Randolph Brazell. He was born in 1864 and died on my daddy's birthday in 1952. My memories of him are good, but limited, as I was only 10 years old when he passed. He wore his felt hat and white shirt everywhere he went. He was cold natured, a trait I inherited. Family joked that he might have invented the "layered look" because they claimed he started adding layers of clothing around October and started shedding layers in April. He was stooped and walked with a cane, no doubt the result of degenerative arthritis, which I also inherited. I remember the night Granddaddy died. We kids were banished to the yard to spare us witnessing his final struggle for another breath. Their old clapboard house offered little soundproofing and we crawled under the house and, yes, we heard his gasps. He was very much loved. He is buried in the cemetery of the small country church that I have attended my entire life, allowing me to pay my respects often.
