This Moon rock is Apollo 15 Lunar Sample 15016,20.
The photograph was taken at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington DC, USA in May 1996.

The displayed Lunar Sample 15016,20 is a 65 gram fragment cut from a larger rock (Lunar Sample 15016) that originally weighed 923.7 grams. It was collected in 1971 from the Mare surface in the Hadley-Apennine region of the Moon.

The Apollo 15 commander, David Scott, noticed the rock on the surface while driving the Lunar Roving Vehicle and stopped to collect it. This unplanned stop was about 125 metres west of Rhysling crater. The location was later designated 'Geology Station 3'. 

Lunar Sample 15016 was the only rock collected from Station 3. The area had abundant subdued craters between about 10 cm and 1 metre diameter. The sample appeared to be representative of the other nearby large rock fragments.

Sample 15016 is a highly-vesicular, olivine-normative, basalt. Its major element composition is similar to that of the non-vesicular basalt Sample 15555, and these basalts are typical of many of the basalt samples returned from the Apollo 15, Hadley-Rille site. Analysis suggests that this volcanic magma originally came from a depth of greater than 250 km within the Moon. It is around 3.3 to 3.4 billion years old, and has been exposed on the lunar surface for about 300 million years.

15016 is a light brownish-grey rock. A highly vesicular, porphyritic, olivine-normative basalt with phenocrysts of zoned pyroxene and olivine in a matrix of pyroxene and plagioclase. Analysis in the 1970's indicated the main minerals were: Pyroxene ~ 59 - 67 %, Plagioclase ~ 20 - 27% and Olivine ~ 6 - 8%.
