Die Photobastei zeigt Meilensteine in Hansruedi Gigers (1940 – 2014) Werdegang von seinen Anfängen mit Zeichnungen in Untergrundmagazinen und Variationen der für seinen erotisch-morbiden Stil charakteristischen Motive „Atomkinder“ (1963), „Biomechanoiden“ (1969) und „Passagen“ (1971-73). In seinem Werkzyklus „Biomechanoiden“ nimmt er die Verschmelzung von Körper und Technik vorweg; in der Arbeit „Atomkinder“ die Angst vor der Auslöschung der Menschheit durch einen Atomkrieg. In „Passagen“ nimmt Giger Bezug auf das Geburtstrauma und schöpft daraus Bilderwelten, die weit über die individuelle Erfahrung hinaus auf die Abgründe und Gefahren der modernen Gesellschaft verweisen.
