A Most Remote Cabin - a photo on Flickriver

Hidden in the Inyo Mountains of California, days of four-wheeling and hiking from the nearest road, is what's perhaps the most hard-to-access cabin in the state. I took the shortest route to here and did around 50 miles on a 4wd road followed by a hike with 17,000 ft of elevation change. The cabin was constructed on the hillside to service an adjacent gold mine over a century ago. The light on the horizon left of the cabin is from Las Vegas.

The combination of moonlight on the cabin and the milky way behind is quite rare, happening only a few times per year. It necessitated doing the hike in late June. We were lucky with the temperatures, but they could easily reach dangerously high levels. This was shot on a loaner copy of the new Sigma 14mm f/1.4. The corner sharpness is phenomenal, and distinctly better than DPReview's samples suggested. I'm guessing they didn't focus right.
