White Stork - Ciconia ciconia - a photo on Flickriver

On 26 April the White Stork Project announced eggs had been laid in 2 nests on the Knepp estate, the principle site of a reintroduction programme in Sussex. The first chicks hatched on 15 May and with some easing of travel restrictions at the end of May, I was eager to record this momentous local event.

Fortunately one pair had chosen a relatively accessible tree in which to raise their 3 chicks and whilst the female of the pair was a project bird, the male (pictured here) was un-ringed and presumed to be a migrant. In total 4 chicks fledged including the 3 from this nest on 13th July.

On another positive note, I discovered that my local Little Owl pair also fledged young again this year which is good news given the decline in numbers (and notwithstanding that they're not a native part of our fauna).
