Trio/Kenwood TS-530S and TS-830S - a photo on Flickriver

The 530S can be regarded as a "cost reduced" version of the 830S.   There is a great deal of similarity between the two.   The most significant difference is that the TS-830S has a dual conversion superhet architecture which incorporates Kenwood's clever variable IF bandwidth system, but the TS-530S has only a single conversion architecture.   There are those who say that the 530S is the better for it, but I am sitting well and truly on the fence regarding that issue!  As it happens the '530S is fully loaded with optional narrow fiters but the '830S isn't so direct comparisons are prone to error ...

They exhibit notably less sturdy construction than their predecessors the 520 and 820 respectively, and also than their contemporary rivals the Yaesu FT-101ZD and FT-902DM.   Still fine radios though.

The Trio/Kenwoods must have remained in production for a relatively long time - according to my investigations the '530S on the left was made in 1981, whilst the '830 on the right was made in around 1986.
