Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps)

Herman's Pond, Rancho San Rafael, Reno, Washoe Co, Nevada (June 9th, 2014). 5. Small pond in a large county park in NW Reno.

Nest (Nest 1) with 7 eggs at the edge of a small cattail stand at one end of the pond (grab shot--the eggs were briefly exposed to view when a passer-by startled the grebe off the nest). Note the 2 comparatively lightly stained eggs which were presumably the last to be laid. At least 2 of the 7 eggs eventually hatched.

A second nest (Nest 2) was later built in another part of the same pond while the parents were still looking after 2 three-quarter-grown chicks from Nest 1
