What I thought we found on our hike was a type of fungi is actually what is known as a parasitic plant.

There are a few types and we found a few in various stages of their lives, so beautiful and tiny. If you are not like me and always looking for fungi while on hikes, you would walk right by these and many other neat things growing in the undergrowth.

The gnome plant said to be rare to uncommon, with a limited geographic distribution on the west coast of North America (BC to California) and likes to grow only in old growth forests.They only grow a few centimetres (an inch or two) above the surrounding leaf litter. If that is the case, then I consider us to be very lucky, it was the first time spotting it for me and in the little area there were several growing.
