Fray reverts to type - a photo on Flickriver

            Another view at Whittlesey, looking in the opposite direction from the previous picture.  Now I'm confused.  In my day, during Wilson's Reign of Terror, there was just British Railways ...oh, all right then, British Rail.  Here we have a locomotive of the same type as the last, but owned by a different operator which, nonetheless, uses the same class designation, implying a single, shared fleet.  I notice that the loco has three headlights in triangular formation and that the lower ones are actually paired, one round, one rectangular.  These appear to have been illuminated in a particular configuration ...which was the same on the train travelling in the opposite direction.  I would like to think that this is a revival, in a more hi-tech form, of the old system of disc headcodes ...the line, after all, has manual signalling.  But I daresay I am wrong.
Nearby March was at one time an important "hub" of course, with a large Motive Power Depot.  I would have supposed that this former importance had declined, but considerable freight traffic endures.  I suppose any rail-borne freight from Felixstowe would come this way to reach destinations in the Midlands or North.  I must have come through here as a passenger on my All-line Rail Rover "cathedral" holiday in August 1975.  I was "doing" Ely and Peterborough.  Stubble burning was not yet illegal and I remember the great columns of smoke rising from distant fields as the straw-coloured landscape danced and shimmered in the heat of that stifling summer.  Incidentally, I took this using the digital equivalent of motor-drive, whatever they call it.  Quite handy for taking pics of an approaching, fast-moving object.
