This street (like Rose Street to the south) was originally intended for occupation by workers and shopkeepers, but a large part of it was built up with modest Ashland-fronted houses for merchants, professional people and even a few landed gentry.  In 1806  the two west sections were re-named after their builders, Hill and Young. 
19 Thistle Street was re-built in 1900 to provide halls for St Andrew’s Church.
  A plaque on the front of the building reads “This building gifted to the Minister and Elders of the Parish of St Andrew [George Street] by Mr Alexander Maclean Perfumer in Edinburgh in the year 1835 was rebuilt by the Kirk Session and Congregation for the use of the Church and Parish of St Andrew in the year 1900”
