Space Shuttle Enterprise

The Space Shuttle Enterprise which actually never flew a 'real' mission in space but rather was the vehicle that tested the concept. It was located at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Chantilly Virginia. When the Space Shuttle Program was retired, the Space Shuttle Discovery took its place in Chantilly and the Enterprise was Flown to New York on the Shuttle Transport Jet. After being placed on the deck of the USS Intrepid, a temporary soft cover was errected around it. Unfortunately Hurricane Sandy literally blew that away causing some superficial damage to the shuttle's exterior. This image is post the storm before a more permanent hard cover was built around the shuttle which is what protects it from the elements to this day. There were plans for another location near the Intrepid to build a small shuttle type museum affiliated with Intrepid Air and Space Museum, but that seems to have been shelfed for now.
