ERIE - a photo on Flickriver

ERIE

            From the archive, last winter’s business trip to Erie Pennsylvania, a nocturnal image of the Erie Land Lighthouse that the state of Pennsylvania of the newly formed United States had it deed granted by none other than its first President George Washington.  The state wished to establish a sea port on the Great Lakes and had paid Iroquois Nation richly to relinquish its rights to the land.  It was not until 1810 US Congress passed the act giving the Secretary of Treasury to establish a light at or near Presq’isle in Lake Erie.  Presque Isle which literally means ‘almost an island’ is a seven mile peninsula that juts into Lake Erie.  Though the funds were in place construction of the first Land Lighthouse was delayed as the War of 1812 broke out as the British Empire want to put the newly formed national back under British rule.  So Land Lighthouse began operation in 1818.  This lighthouse began to dangerously settle and by 1858 was replaced by lighthouse number 2.  Sadly only after a decade of service, the same settling foundation that plagued the first quickly the second tower which at 56 feet was greater than two times the height of the first thus the more rapid settling.  Lighthouse number 3 which is what this image is had a proper foundation is 49 feet.  Now a historic landmark at lighthouse park, surrounded by many residences it was tricky to find, but I was glad I did as it is a charming lighthouse indeed.
